Gustafson has been elected president and chief operating officer of The St. Paul Companies. The announcement was made here today by Douglas W. Leatherdale, chairman and chief executive officer of The St. Paul
Companies (NYSE: SPC). Gustafson has also been elected to the board of directors of The St. Paul.
Gustafson, 52, has been president and chief operating officer of General Re Corporation, the international reinsurer, based in Stamford, Connecticut.
"We are delighted to welcome Jim Gustafson, a highly-regarded and seasoned insurance executive to The St. Paul," Leatherdale said. "Jim brings a high caliber of leadership to the company and we have great confidence in his ability to help lead the company in the coming years."
Gustafson joined General Re in 1969 as an underwriter and moved rapidly through a series of increasingly responsible underwriting positions, becoming vice president of the treaty underwriting division in 1978. In 1987 he was named president and CEO of the General Reinsurance Services Corporation, the unit responsible for the company's human resources, technology, branch administration, home office and branch accounting, and other general service functions; senior vice president and chief underwriting officer in 1982; executive vice president in 1991; and president and COO of General Re in 1995.
Most of General Re's operations in the U.S. reported to Gustafson, as did all of the non-U.S. operations, including Cologne Reinsurance and several smaller operating companies in the U.K., Australia, and Argentina. He also had responsibility for General Re's aviation subsidiary, a surplus line subsidiary company, an alternative risk solution subsidiary insurer, and General Re's technology organization. Gustafson was heavily involved in the integration of Cologne Reinsurance and National Reinsurance following the purchases of those two companies by General Re.
Gustafson, a native of Huron, South Dakota, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and economics from the University of South Dakota, in Vermillion.
