Dropping Temperatures Raise Potential for Frozen Pipes

January 21, 2009

HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Drastically low temperatures are affecting much of the nation and when thermometers consistently read below zero, the chances of pipes freezing goes up. However, taking the appropriate steps can help prevent pipes from freezing and minimize the possibility of significant water damage to your home.

"Unlike storm damage, every burst pipe claim is preventable," said Patrick Gee, senior vice president of Travelers Claim Services. "With persistent sub-zero temperatures, particularly in regions that do not regularly experience such conditions, pipes located inside walls and crawl spaces can easily freeze."

According to ISO, a company specializing in providing information about risk, water damage and freezing ranks as the third most severe insurance claim behind fire and wind and hail. ISO also reports the average claim from water damage and freezing causes $5,023 in damages.

Travelers is recommending homeowners take the following steps to help protect their pipes:

-- Open the cabinets under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heat to
        circulate around water pipes.
-- Let faucets drip. Moving water freezes more slowly than still water.
-- Insulate pipes in your home's crawl space or attic. Pre-cut foam
insulation is inexpensive and easy to install.
-- Make sure outside water hoses are disconnected from spigots and drain
        hoses.
-- Insulate your outdoor water meter box, and be sure the lid is on tight.
-- Maintain heat in your home at a comfortable level, even if you will be
        away from home.

"If you suspect you have frozen pipes, be sure to turn off the main water valve in your home and contact a plumber for assistance," said Gee. "Then be sure to contact your insurance carrier if any damages have occurred."
