Travelers Honors All Hands Volunteers with 2016 Community Resilience
Award
CHARLESTON, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The Travelers
Institute, the public policy division of The Travelers Companies,
Inc. (NYSE: TRV),
today hosts its annual “Kicking Off Hurricane Preparedness Season”
symposium at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. In
collaboration with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety
and the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of South Carolina, the
event focuses on how local governments, businesses and families can
prepare for and recover from severe weather as the Atlantic Hurricane
Season officially begins June 1.
“Preparedness is critical to staying safe during catastrophic events
that can devastate communities and displace families and businesses,”
said Joan Woodward, President of the Travelers Institute and Executive
Vice President of Public Policy at Travelers. “We are pleased to
organize resources and provide a forum to share best practices on what
communities can do to help protect lives and property during storm
season.”
During the event, Travelers will award the second annual Travelers
Excellence in Community Resilience Award to All Hands Volunteers, a
nonprofit disaster relief organization that is committed to helping
communities around the world recover after harsh weather or other
devastating events. Presented by the Travelers Institute and the
Travelers Foundation, the $100,000 grant recognizes organizations that
help communities recover from natural disasters.
“All Hands Volunteers is honored to receive recognition for our
commitment to staying with communities from the first days post-disaster
through the recovery process of rebuilding their homes, schools and
hope,” said Erik Dyson, Executive Director and CEO of All Hands
Volunteers, who will join today’s panel discussion. “This award will
enable us to strengthen flood-affected counties in South Carolina
through ‘build back better’ construction and partnerships which improve
the capacity of local partners to meet future crises.”
Ray Farmer, Director, South Carolina Department of Insurance, will
deliver the symposium’s keynote address. Woodward will moderate a
discussion on hurricane preparedness, joined by the following panelists:
- Erik Dyson, Executive Director and CEO, All Hands Volunteers
