October 17, 2018

Every Second Matters™ campaign emphasizes insurance industry’s role to promote safe driving practices

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Travelers Institute, the public policy division of The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV), will host a town hall tomorrow at the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) Convention to discuss approaches to combating distracted driving. The interactive program, part of the Travelers Institute®Every Second Matters campaign, will explore distracted driving prevention and the opportunities for Canada’s insurance industry to act.

Travelers Canada found in a recent survey that 37 per cent of Canadian drivers use a mobile device to communicate while driving, despite the well-publicized dangers of doing so. The same survey found that while 69 per cent believe the biggest distraction while driving is using a mobile device, only 24 per cent believe that it is the biggest distraction for them.

“Distracted driving is an issue that affects all Canadians, whether they engage in these risky behaviours or not,” said Joan Woodward, President of the Travelers Institute and Executive Vice President of Public Policy at Travelers. “As an industry, we have the data, the resources and the infrastructure to provide education and help families and employers promote safe driving practices.”

The Travelers Institute town hall will feature three one-hour sessions from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the Scotiabank Convention Centre Exhibit Hall A&B, with Travelers Institute Executive Director Jessica Kearney serving as moderator. Jordan Solway, Group General Counsel and Vice President for Claim, and Jean Pierre Gagnon, Vice President for Personal Insurance, both of Travelers Canada, will join as speakers. For more information about the event, please visit the IBAO Convention website.
